Objective

Dayton Agreement

The General Framework Peace Agreement for Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosnia), commonly refered to as the Dayton Peace Agreement, was brokered in Dayton, Ohio on November 21, 1995. It was formally signed in Paris, France on December 14, 1995, by the Bosnian President Alija Izetbegović, the Serbian President Slobodan Milošević, and the Croatian President Franjo Tuđman. It ended the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia after the worst atrocities and war crimes were committed in Europe since the Second World War.

The Dayton Peace Agreement was drafted to pave the way for Bosnia to become a stable and prosperous democracy with a bright future as a member-state in the European Union. A constitutional reform was envisioned with a strong emphasis on democratic consolidation and rule of law.
